The Farm

Τhe farm at Metohi Istoria plays a crucial role in preserving the estate’s agricultural heritage, supported by the Spyridakis Family’s commitment to sustainability. It also grants guests a distinctive opportunity to connect with nature, history and the abundance of the land.

An enviable position

The farm is located on the periphery of the city, just 5 kilometers away from Chania’s old port. Nestled at the base of the mountain, it is secluded from the noise of the city and has a enviable position with a full view of the old port, Souda Bay and the western part of the area.

The property is divided into the agricultural production area and the estate. It belongs to the broader area of Nerokouros, which has been cultivated since ancient times. Due to its fertility, the Nerokouros area provided fruits, cheese and olives to the entire municipality and its inhabitants as of that period.

A variety of products

We take pride in being one of Chania’s oldest and largest avocado producers, specializing in prime varieties such as Fuerte, Zutano, and Hass. We even have a significant production of oranges and mandarins.

In our farm, you can discover a diverse array of Mediterranean and semi-tropical fruits throughout the seasons. Wander beneath the grape pergola in September and relish the sweetness of our figs. Autumn brings a delectable harvest of mangoes, lotus, bergamot and quince.

As Winter arrives, witness the olive harvest, dedicated to crafting our premium olive oil exclusively for our own consumption. During the same period, oranges, mandarins, and a significant portion of our avocado yield are harvested.

In Spring, enjoy delicious peaches, grapefruits as well as macadamia nuts. Explore the landscape adorned with various wild, edible and grasses.

As Summer unfolds, indulge in tasting our vanillas and exclusive ‘kontoula’ pears, a petite and exquisite variety with unparalleled flavors and aromas. Furthermore, savor the delight of harvesting our first figs. We invite you to experience the rich tapestry of flavors that our farm has to offer throughout the changing seasons.

Eco-sustainable approach

Welcome to a world where every harvest and flutter of wings tells a story of dedication and passion for sustainable production.

Committed to environmental sustainability and biodiversity, our farming philosophy rests on two essential pillars. We consistently look for innovative solutions to reduce, and whenever possible, eliminate our ecological footprint.

Enacting a Water and Tillage Conservation strategy, we minimize tillage to safeguard precious moisture and cultivate robust soil health. Our dedication to resource efficiency extends to the adoption of irrigation systems, with the implementation of drip irrigation techniques designed to curtail water wastage.

Beyond this, we diligently employ Soil Health Management methodologies. Regular soil tests are conducted to meticulously monitor nutrient levels, enabling us to fine-tune fertilization practices. Our commitment to holistic farming practices is further demonstrated through the embrace of Silvopasture, a harmonious integration of trees and wild edible grasses into our agricultural landscape. This not only provides vital shade but also enriches soil fertility while fostering biodiversity.

As stewards of the local ecosystem, we actively support the preservation of natural habitats on our farm, creating a haven that harbors local wildlife. Amidst the orchard’s embrace, a pair of wild hawks, a white owl and other animals find sanctuary. Visitors can enjoy watching these wild creatures fly over the mountains or through the avocado trees as they search for food.
