Our Story

Welcome to Metohi Istoria, one of the oldest and most well-preserved estates in Chania, Crete that dates back to the 15th century. Representing classic Venetian Gothic architecture, the estate is surrounded by lush avocado forests and other tropical and Mediterranean fruit trees, creating a serene atmosphere.

In 1972, the estate was purchased by the Spyridakis family with a commitment to preserving its historical essence and beauty. The family’s philosophy ensures that the estate remains as a living testament of prosperity, good fortune, euphoria and all the goods of life. As of 2015, Metohi Istoria is used as a venue for weddings, baptisms, celebrations, ceremonies, cultural events, school visits and various other experiences.

Metohi Istoria invites you to create your own exquisite story within its historic grounds. A place which, not only pays tribute to Cretan history, but shares cultural insights into one of Greece’s most special regions.

A Glimpse into the Past

The first part of Metohi Istoria was built during the Venetian occupation of Crete. Upon entering the estate, you will see a large oil mill and the old machinery used for oil extraction, symbolizing the wealth and prosperity of that time and likely serving the entire region.

From the Byzantine years onward, thanks to the area’s fertile soil, Metohi Istoria along with other estates around Chania, became major suppliers of oil, wine, cheese, fruits and vegetables to the Republic of Venice (La Serenissima).

In the 17th century, after the occupation of Crete by the Ottomans, the estate was given to an official of the Turkish empire. After Greece’s liberation in 1898, it was once again transferred to its Cretan owners.

In the past, Metohi Istoria was divided into independent farm complexes. The main building, a two-story residence, served as the owner’s home. Furthermore, it was surrounded by smaller houses for permanent and seasonal personnel. Located somewhere within the farm was a fountain which was a source of good luck.

High stone walls enclosed the estate, safeguarding supportive buildings such as the old oil mill, warehouses for storing products, supplies and animal feed. Outside the walls, a historic well and trough, once used for laundry, still exist. The estate’s variety of fruits, vegetables and trees made it self-sufficient.

The Spyridakis family is dedicated to preserving the heritage of this 700-year-old estate. With respect for the past, they focus on restoring, preserving and passing down centuries-old traditions. Metohi Istoria fosters an appreciation of agriculture and traditional craftsmanship, representing the harmonious and timeless Cretan lifestyle.
